Nothing beats the fun of remembering all the wonderful MOMents you’ve had with your kids. It doesn’t matter if you are a new mom or your kids are having children of their own. Whether you are all together or have to Zoom in, you can also create a memorable day by spending time in your family photo collection, revisiting the journey.
Here are 3 easy ways to do that in Apple Photos.
Update your People tagging
The People & Pets tab is your first stop. It’s on the upper left side bar in Photos on the Mac and in the Album tab on iPhone. Hopefully you’ve been monitoring the face tagging and have checked for recent additions from time to time, but if not then this is a great time to do that. By regularly confirming face identification the app gets more and more accurate until it can identify people in new photos without your help.
Once it’s up to speed you will be able to go to People & Pets and see all the photos in the Library of each and every one of your children. Pretty nifty. It’s fun.
You can change the sort order from most recent photos to oldest or vice versa.
When you scroll all the way to the bottom, you can choose group photos that your kids are in, as well as pick locations. Maybe check out that family road trip. Or a college graduation.
Being able to search on the photos of your children in so many ways is quick and convenient.
And, hey . . . if you have tons of photos of a newborn or toddler, just change the sort order to newest photos first and they’ll aways be right there when you go to their People tag. No more scrolling through your whole camera roll to find pictures of your new grandchild.
Memories at your fingertips
Maybe you haven’t paid much attention to the Memories slideshows that Photos creates - the short themed videos that pop up every few days. Stories like “Pet Friends over the Years” or “At The Shore Nantucket July 17, 2022.” These are short curated videos set to music.
The cool thing about Memories is that you often get videos you’d never think to make yourself. It might be a selection of family pet photos “over the years.” Or a random day at the beach. Maybe a sampler of some barely remembered trip. These snippets of your life set to music are always a delightful surprise.
What’s new for 2024 is that Memories can be edited and customized. Sometimes Photos will include an odd image or the sequence needs to be adjusted. You can now fix these issues in the Memories feature and make the video just how you’d like it.
Once that’s done you can make it a Favorite so it stays permanently as a choice in the Memories queue. On iPhone you can save the Memory as a video to your Library and share it.
Your Mother’s Day history
A fun fact is that in Apple Photos, the Years tab shows you a sample photo from this date in years past. So if you are lounging comfortably in bed on Mother’s Day, with uncertain smells and sounds coming from the kitchen, you can see a sampler of images from Mother’s Days past. Picking a year and switching to Days view will bring up more detail.
Alternatively, you can actually do a search on “Mother’s Day” and Photos knows that date from past years to show you all those photos in one group.
All the Mothers in your life
And it’s not just about the kids. You might take a minute to recall all the mothers in your life. From your own mother and all she did, to the other mothers who were there to help. It’s all there. In your photos library.
So enjoy the memories at your fingertips.
Have a wonderful time with your family. Really or virtually.
Happy Mother’s Day.
