Only 4 More Weeks For Summer Photos
DID YOU HAVE A SUMMER PHOTOS PLAN? HOW'S THAT COMING?
Here in the U.S., summer’s end revolves around Labor Day which comes this year on September 1st. As I write this, that’s 4 weeks away. Still time enough to tackle your summer photo plans, or even create one if none exist.
What photo plans, you say?
And I say; the ones that will get you through the winter.
For most of us, summer is the great annual reset; longer days, slower pace, vacations, travel, gatherings. It’s also a time to finish the tasks that have been hanging on too long and to prepare a bit for new ones.
Celebrate the summer
For photos, there’s a lot of opportunity here, in this summer lifestyle, from creation to cleanup. If you haven’t thought about it yet, here are some simple suggestions to weave photography into your days and cap your summer with a sense of accomplishment.
TRAVEL
Travel is so much a part of summer. Whether going somewhere old and familiar or seeing new sights.
Spend half an hour or so on your own photo walk. Explore the place with fresh eyes and a goal of making pictures that capture the charm and uniqueness of it. Details, street scenes, interesting people.
Candid photos of your friends and family. Around the kitchen, games, reading, phone-free moments.
B-roll. Your travel is a micro-story in your life journey. Movies get secondary shots called b-roll that tell the viewer where the story happens and develops context. Get your own when traveling. Yes, who needs another shot of the Eiffel Tower? But you were there in the rain. Get that.
Did you promise someone on your journey a photo? Send that. I recommend using iCloud Links for best quality.
Take at least one photo you would want large on your wall. A photo that recalls the feeling of your travel experience.
Take 12 or 18 photos that you would want in a calendar. Photos that make you smile.
THIS SUMMER
Something is extra special this summer. Only now. A milestone event. A child’s last summer at home. Save it in pictures.
We get only 18 summers or so with our kids at home. Every one is different. Capture the story of this one; 2025. 50 years from now you’ll have a wonderful retrospective.
Was this the summer you learned to fly? Moved to a new home? Built a tree house? Helped someone? Get that.
Your Dad’s 70th birthday. A special anniversary. The block party. A family reunion. Get photos of everyone and video interviews to share.
Weddings. Not the big stuff the pro photographers get, but the small, personal moments they don’t. Backstories, well wishes, table talk. Musicians. Caterers, Florists. The guest point of view.
Take a photo class online or in person.
PROJECTS
You know. The photo things that have been on your to-do list so long they’re getting dusty.
Sorting through a box of old prints to find the keepers and scanning them. Just one box. Or two. Get the process moving.
Getting your video tapes digitized while they are still readable.
Family portraits. How long has it been? People look better in the summer. Relaxed and happy. Now is the time. Even if you’re missing someone. Love the ones you’re with.
A photo book - a trip, a year book, maybe last summer. Or a friendship gift, just because.
That photo you took for your wall. Get it printed. And go one size bigger than you think it should be. Big photos are wonderful.
Cleaning up your last 12 months of photos to get ready for the next 12 months.
Clean up the people tagging in your Photos Library. It only takes 5 or 10 minutes. And it’s fun.
Summer is a great time to both celebrate the special moments, and to chip away at photo tasks and projects what will nurture you through the next 12 months. Most digital photo tasks can easily be done in small pieces and are fun to revisit. It’s a great time to build new picture habits along with wonderful new memories and go back to your regular life with a feeling of accomplishment.
Twenty-nine more days and counting.
Happy Summer!
